Home Remedies for Migraine

Migraine is a common form of headache found in most individuals. It is mostly seen in people who remain under intense nervous strain. This type of headache is often preceded by flashes of light which are seen at the sides of one's vision. This is one sided headache and there is numbness and tingling on that side of the head. Migraine is so common that one person in every ten has it sometime or the other. It is most common in early adult life and women are more frequently affected as compare to men.
 
Causes of Migraine

The most important cause of migraine headache is nervous tension and stress. Over activity of the muscles of neck also causes migraine headache. People who work in front of computers for long hours may suffer from migraine headaches.

Loss of sleep is another important cause for migraine headache. People who do not get sufficient and sound sleep experience pain in head during the day.

Decreased appetite and intake of fatty and junk food also lead to headache. People who do not get proper nutrition feel weakness in the muscles and nerves which results in pain in head.

Intake of certain drugs also causes headache. People who take excessive medication for various problems may suffer from migraine headache.

Women suffer from migraine headache at menstruation. Loss of blood during periods causes headache
 
Signs and symptoms
Migraine headache is often preceded by short period of depression, irritability, restlessness and loss of appetite.

It occurs on one side of the head. Pain starts at the back of the neck and comes over one side of the head.

Nausea and vomiting is a common symptom found in most people suffering from migraine headache.

Extremities feel cold and person wants to be left alone. The attack may last for hours or days. Migraine headache arise from some reflex spasm or tension in one of the arteries leading to the brain.
 
Home remedies
  • Grape juice is an effective home remedy for migraine headache. Drink one glass grape juice everyday to get rid of migraine headache.
  • Make a paste by grinding cabbage leaves. Apply this paste on forehead during attack. It gives immediate relief and is found to be an effective home remedy for migraine headache.
  • Carrot juice and cucumber juice combined together also gives relief from migraine headache.
  • Crush lemon crusts in fine powder in a mortar. Make a paste by adding little water. Apply this paste on forehead. It is very useful in treating migraine headache naturally.
  • Take some mustard seeds, crush them into a fine powder and mix it with two teaspoon of water. Put this in nose, it helps to relieve pain in the head.
  • A well balanced diet also helps to reduce frequent spells of headache.
  • Fruits are a good source of essential vitamins and minerals which help to reduce attacks of migraine headaches.
  • Constipation should be avoided. Drink eight to ten glasses of water to move out toxins from the body.
