Home Remedies for Indigestion

Indigestion is not a disease, but it is only a symptom associated with other gastric ailments. People with indigestion complain of a number of different symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, upper abdominal pain and flatulence. There is a sense of fullness, in the abdomen after eating food. Indigestion occurs when food is not properly chewed or eaten rapidly. Many nervous individuals rapidly gulp down their food and swallow excessive amounts of air as well.
 
Causes of indigestion

  • Unhealthy eating habits are a common cause of indigestion. People who eat excessive amount of fats and junk food often suffer from indigestion.
  • Lack of exercise is another important cause of indigestion. People with sedentary habits suffer from complaints of indigestion frequently.
  • Emotional upsets and severe mental strain are also common causes of gas and indigestion. Constipation may interfere with the normal flow through gastrointestinal tract, and often causes gas and abdominal pain. Certain foods, which are poorly cooked or half cooked, can cause trouble.
  • People with cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol drinking also suffer from acidity, gas and indigestion.
  • Excessive intake of tea and coffee is also harmful for health. It produces acid and causes irritation of the lining of the stomach which causes digestion problems.
  • Intake of excessive medication causes gastric problems. Undue intake of medication should be avoided.
  • Carbonated drinks release a lot of carbon dioxide gas which may produce a sense of palpitation in the region of heart.
 
Signs and symptoms of Indigestion
Extreme pain and fullness of the abdomen is felt by the people suffering from indigestion.

Belching accompanied with bouts of vomiting may be present.

Headache, tiredness and fatigue is also present in people with indigestion Patient becomes restless and there is loss of sleep.

Heartburn and sour eructation is felt in the upper epigastria. There is burning sensation in the chest.
 
Home remedies
  • Garlic juice is effective remedy for indigestion. Garlic juice can be taken by mixing it with soya oil. It is an effective remedy for stomach ailments.
  • Take some cumin seeds and coriander juice. Put it in a glass of water along with a pinch of salt. Drinking this water is an effective remedy for indigestion.
  • Lemon is another important home remedy. Put one or two table spoon of lemon juice in a glass of water along with a pinch of salt. It gives immediate relief from gas and fullness.
  • Ginger is also useful for digestion problems. Ginger tea is effective for getting relief from symptoms of indigestion.
  • Mix one table spoon of baking soda in water and drink it. It is an effective home remedy for getting rid of indigestion.
  • Avoid eating fried and fatty foods. Take light meal.
  • Drink as much water as you can. It is very important to keep your body hydrated during indigestion.
  • Exercise is an important natural way of getting rid of stomach ailments. Do not go to sleep immediately after eating food. One should go to bed after two hours of eating food at night.
  • Crush cardamom and cloves together and take it with ginger juice. It will immediately give relief from indigestion.
