Home remedies for gout

Gout is a disease of joints in which joints become swollen and painful. Generally small joints are involved. It is a metabolic disorder as uric acid level of blood rises. Gout is frequently seen in males, usually in middle life. The true cause of this disease is not known. Gout tends to run in families. Excess of uric acid results in the formation of deposits in soft tissues and around small joints. This results in painful swelling of the joints. It is frequently seen in knee and ankle joints. Causes of Gout

Pain occurs due to ill-fitting shoes or tight gloves or socks. It is frequently seen in people who take excessive proteins in diet. People who are in a habit of intake of excessive alcohol also suffer from gouty deposits.

It is frequently seen in people with surgical operation, or after an acute infection of nose or throat.

Emotional stress is also an aggravating factor for acute pain in the joints in people suffering from gout.
Signs and symptoms
Gout is manifested by acute pain and swelling of joints. Joints become stiff and painful. Pain aggravates on slightest touch and is aggravated in winters.

There is formation of hard deposits in small joints known as tophi. These nodular swellings are characteristic feature of gout. Movement of joints is difficult and painful. The skin covering the joints becomes red, hot and shining.

Fever, rapid pulse and feeling of general weakness may be accompanied during acute attack of gout.
Home remedies for Gout

Gout is a chronic disease. During an acute attack it is best keep the patient in bed. Give him abundant fluids, particularly water and fruit juices. He should be given a soft diet. The patient should avoid excessive intake of proteins in the diet. Patient should not use alcohol in any form during acute attack.   • Lemon is a good source of vitamin C. it helps to balance uric acid levels in blood. Thus, take one tea spoon of lemon juice and mix it in water. Drink it two times in a day. It gives relief from pain in joints.
  • Cherries are considered good home remedy for getting rid of pain and swelling of joints. Cherries either sweet or sour are helpful in treating gout at home.
  • Alternate hot and cold compresses kept on affected joints also help to relieve swelling and pain of joints.
  • Almond oil gives strength to the cartilage and bones of joints. Massage of affected joints with almond oil two times a day gives relief from pain and swelling.
  • Turmeric is a good natural anti-inflammatory product. Mix turmeric powder with lemon juice. Apply this paste on the affected joints. It gives relief from swelling and stiffness of the joints.
  • Patient suffering from gout should drink maximum fluids and water to excrete excess of uric acid from the body.
  • Mix some charcoal in water and dip affected foot in this water. It gives immediate relief from pain and swelling.
