Asthma

Asthma is a respiratory problem with bouts of difficulty in breathing. Difficulty in breathing is associated with feeling of suffocation due to blockage of respiratory passages.

There is violent coughing in order to get sufficient breathing by removing mucus from the respiratory passages. There are three main causes that lead to obstruction of the respiratory passages. These three main causes are: Spasm of the bronchial muscles, accumulation of mucus in the respiratory passages and inflammation of mucous lining of the lungs.

Asthma is also considered as a heredity disease as it is seen in members of the same family. Asthma is seen in people of all ages but mostly it is prevalent in children. The bronchial tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs get inflamed. This causes swelling of the air passages.

The muscles tighten and narrow the bronchial tubes making less air to reach lungs. There is excessive production of the mucus due to inflammation of the lungs which in turn increases the obstruction.

Signs and Symptoms

There are number of respiratory signs and symptoms associated with asthma. There is tightness in the chest, cough and bouts of difficulty in breathing. Coughing is worse at night and in the early morning and patient has a difficulty in sleeping.

There is a wheezing sound from the lungs when breathing. Shortness of breath is experienced by some people and they gasp for breath. Patient feels weak and tired. There is general weakness of the body and patient is prone to other respiratory affections
